As we know by now, many smart and helpful books address bowel conditions from medical and recipe standpoints, but here are just a few of Judy’s recommendations for books that probe the d-tract from other angles:

  • Rumbles: A Curious History of the Gut by Elsa Richardson is a fascinating multidisciplinary history of the GI system that considers the gut as a reflection and creator of broader culture.

  • Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach is an animated and frankly hilarious probe into the various organs of the digestive system (let’s just say, it includes a section on the professionals who taste pet food).

  • Guts by Raina Telgemeier is a middle grade graphic novel about the experience of chronic and persistent stomach pain.

  • Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ is written by a doctor, but offers an animated look at the digestive system.

  • We recently discovered the beautiful book,Meaty, a collection of personal essays by comedian Samantha Irby in which writes about her Crohn’s disease and UC with candor and pathos and humor.

  • Adele Roberts’ Personal Best is a candid and moving story about her bowel cancer and ostomy.
